About This Property

THE NOWLING RESIDENCE | An Architectural Legacy Perched atop a private, gated one-acre hilltop with panoramic views, The Nowling Residence is a rare example of Southern California Mid-Century Modern architecture. Designed in 1962 by acclaimed architect James E. De Long, who trained under Frank Lloyd Wright at the renowned Taliesin Fellowship, the residence reflects Wright's philosophy of organic architecture—where nature, light, and living exist in harmony. Spanning nearly 3,000 square feet, this architectural treasure blends indoor and outdoor living. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames breathtaking views of the golf course, city lights, Pacific Ocean, and Catalina Island. Spectacular sunsets give way to Disneyland fireworks, creating an unforgettable backdrop. Every detail reflects the architect's vision. Clean horizontal lines, custom built-ins, innovative storage, and an open floor plan create an inviting atmosphere. As documented in the January 15, 1967 edition of Los Angeles Times Home Magazine, the home features vertical-grain heart redwood walls, Philippine mahogany doors, trim, and cabinetry, and distinctive sandblasted Plexiglas lighting panels that cast a warm glow. These materials showcase exceptional craftsmanship and timeless character. Thoughtfully updated while preserving its architectural integrity, the kitchen features quartz countertops, premium appliances, a glass cooktop, and a built-in banquette. Twenty-one fully owned solar panels provide energy efficiency. Outside, this private sanctuary offers a swimming pool, mature landscaping, expansive terraces, and multiple outdoor living areas. A gated circular driveway provides ample parking, including RV space, while the hilltop setting ensures privacy and tranquility. The residence's architectural significance is further distinguished by its history. James E. De Long's architectural archives are preserved at UC Santa Barbara, and the home was featured in Los Angeles Times Home Magazine in 1967. For collectors and admirers of significant architecture, this is a rare opportunity to own a piece of California's architectural heritage—combining historical significance, timeless design, exceptional craftsmanship, and panoramic views. A home to live in. A legacy to preserve. A masterpiece to call home.
